How To Build Solid Shoulders

Strong-looking, solid, broad shoulders are the foundation of muscular, big looking arms.

Without having well-developed shoulder muscles, regardless the size of your biceps & triceps, will give you arms an odd, uneven and unfilled-out look. The shoulder muscles should never be neglected and should for the most part, make up a big portion of your upper arm mass.

To ensure you give your shoulders the attention they require, this guide will outline the best exercises to ensure you hit every part of the deltoids.

The biggest contributor to growing big, well-rounded and fuller looking shoulders, is to ensure you work all parts of the deltoids:

  1. posterior delt

  2. lateral delt

  3. anterior delt

(back, side & front deltoids).

Let's look at the three best exercises to ensure you are hitting these three main parts of the deltoid muscles:

  • Reverse Dumbbell Flys - This will work the posterioir (rear) delt, which tends to be the most neglected part of the shoulder muscle, but is actually the biggest missing contributor to giving your shoulders that nice, rounded look that most people aspire to have.

  • Overhead Press - This is one of the "big 4" compound lifts that work a whole range of muscles in your body and it's is one of the best "bang for your buck" exercises that you can do, especially for shoulder development. This exercise will utilize a whole lot of shoulder power and should be the focus of the lift, which in return will add the majority of the muscle mass to your shoulders, most specifically to the lateral (side) deltoid. This lift should be an absolute staple in your workout routine.

  • Lateral Raise - This exercise is not only another great lift for the lateral delt as a follow up to the overhead press, but is also going to work the front & rear delts due to the nature and focus of the lift. The lateral dumbbell raise should be programmed into your workout regularly to ensure you add resistance across the entirety of the shoulder muscles and to assist in developing balanced shoulder muscle mass.
